BFT Gate Motor Replacement: The Weatherford Owner’s Guide

A BFT gate motor replacement in Weatherford typically runs $650 to $1,400 installed, depending on the model line and whether the control board and arm bracket are still in good shape. Most BFT swing-gate motors take our technicians under two hours to swap once the gate is safely secured, so same-day service is usually available for Weatherford homeowners. The way owners usually find out a BFT motor has failed is simple: the gate moves a few inches and stops, or the motor hums but the arm doesn’t travel, or the remote stopped working entirely and the manual release won’t re-engage. For Weatherford’s heat, the failure is often a cooked capacitor or a cracked gear train inside the actuator body, not the board itself.

We stock BFT-compatible replacement motors and actuator kits on the truck. Before we quote anything, we identify the exact series you have and put the price in writing. No invoice surprises, no parts markup games.

Which BFT Models This Applies To

BFT makes a few distinct motor families, and the replacement path is different for each. The most common units we work on across Weatherford are the Phobos series (swing-gate rams), the Deimos and Aries lines (sliding gates), and the older Leo and Sub series that show up on ranch-style driveways near the Weatherford College corridor. Most BFT motors since roughly 2009 are marked with a silver data plate on the actuator body or the control box lid. That plate lists the exact model, voltage, and date code. Without that plate, we identify the motor by measuring the stroke length on the ram and matching the gear ratio to the gate leaf weight.

One compatibility gotcha: BFT 24V motors cannot run on a 110V board, and the older hydraulic Phobos models use a different mounting base than the electromechanical Phobos N and Phobos N BT. Grab the wrong generation and the bolt pattern won’t line up. That’s the kind of detail we photograph and document before ordering.

We are an independent gate service company, not affiliated with BFT or its distributors. We install OEM BFT motors when the original equipment is still the right call, and we carry quality aftermarket equivalents for older series where OEM parts are discontinued. You get the part number in writing either way, and we explain why we chose it.

Signs Your BFT Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing

Signs Your BFT Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing
  • Gate stops mid-travel and reverses or just stalls. This is usually the current sensor tripping because the gear train is binding, or the capacitor has degraded enough that the motor can’t sustain torque through the full arc. In Texas heat, capacitor failure shows up this way far more often than cold-climate owners would expect.
  • Motor hums but the gate doesn’t move. That hum is the armature trying to turn against a stripped gear or a seized driveshaft. On BFT rams, the internal nylon gear is the sacrificial part, and once teeth shear off the hum is the clearest warning sign.
  • Gate creeps or drifts open on its own. A worn limit switch or a failing brake module lets pressure leak out of the hydraulic circuit (on older Phobos units) or lets the motor freewheel. The gate settles an inch or two every hour, and the controller keeps correcting it until the board overheats.
  • Remote shows power, but the gate doesn’t respond, even on manual button. Before you assume it’s the motor, this is often a dead relay on the control board or a burned fuse. We test the board first, because replacing a motor that wasn’t the problem is the most expensive misdiagnosis in this trade.
  • Burning odor or visible oil seepage from the ram body. Oil means the internal seal on a hydraulic BFT ram has failed, and the motor is pumping against a leak. Burning smell means the winding insulation is breaking down. Both are terminal for that actuator, and both should kill power to the unit immediately.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a BFT swing-gate motor replacement in Weatherford, most jobs land between $650 and $1,100. Sliding-gate motors run higher, usually $950 to $1,400 installed, because the motor itself is larger and the gear rack often needs to be inspected and adjusted at the same time. If your existing arm bracket is bent or the column mount is rusted through, add $80 to $200 for the bracket work. Older hydraulic Phobos units cost more to replace because the retrofit kit includes a new mount plate and recut wiring.

Every price we quote includes the motor or actuator kit, the labor to remove and install it, limit switch setting, force adjustment, and a full photo record of the finished installation. We hand you the written price before any work starts. That’s Clause 1 of our Haven Standard, and it applies to every BFT job, every time. The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the motor or install isn’t right within a year, we make it right without charging you again.

You can safely check a few things before calling: confirm the breaker hasn’t tripped, confirm the manual release isn’t half-engaged, and look for visible oil or a burned smell at the ram. Those observations help us diagnose faster. What you should not do is open the actuator body or try to bench-test a motor that’s still wired into the board. A BFT ram under load hits hard enough to crush fingers, and a wired board carries live 110V even when the gate is idle. That’s not a handyman warning. It’s a fact from the work we’ve corrected after DIY attempts.

If you’re not sure whether the motor is actually the failure point, call (940) 353-4158. We’ll walk through what you’re seeing, quote the replacement honestly, and if we come out and find the motor is fine, we’ll tell you exactly what the real problem is and price that instead. Free second opinion on any written estimate from another company, too. Bring the paperwork and we’ll review it at no cost.
